In 2009,
Tourism Queensland launched a global search to find a caretaker for
the Great Barrier Reef Islands, in Australia. A six months contract
offering $150,000, rent-free luxury accommodation and the oportuynity
to discover and report back to a world-wide audicence what the region
had to offer.
34,000 people
from all over the world applied for the job and all of them were
interviewed via skype. Then, only 16 of them were chosen as the main
candidates for the final interview. Finally, Ben Southall was chosen
after a rigurous selection process.
Ben sent a
video to get the job, which impressed everyone by riding an ostrich,
kissing a giraffe and trekking through Africa. In fact, the year
before Bem drove around Afica to raise money for charity. For 12
months, he had been organizing and taking part in sports events such
as climbing mountains or running marathons. He had worked as a tour
guide, written newspapers and magazine articles and he had already
made a video blog telling his adventures in Africa.
He did a lot of
amazing things like surfing, diving into the sea with fish, flying on
an aeroplane, etc. During his job, Ben jumped out of a boat into the
sea and an Irukandji jellyfish stung him. He was so close to death,
but luckily, a local doctor saved him.
Ben had to work
19 hours every day, so he couldn't have time for relaxing. When he
finished the job, Ben had visited 90 different locations, made 60
blogs, 2000 photos, 47 video diaries, and more than 1500 tweets and
made more than 450 media interviews. He also had more than 8.6
millions of visits in his website.
